Google has deprecated SASL PLAIN.  It will remain active until ClientLogin's Accounts API is deprecated - April 20 of 2015.

Asterisk 1.8 and 10 will be out of support by then.  But, 11 will still be in active development.  So, it's not a major severity now, but during the lifetime of Asterisk 11 res_xmpp will cease to be able to log into Google (probably).  We should do something about that before Google discontinues SASL PLAIN authentication.

With the death (zombies?) of Google Voice XMPP connectivity, this doesn't seem to carry a lot of weight now.
