Description:	Random clicking on the line has been an annoying issue that I and several others have experienced over the years with Asterisk. These aren't artifacts of particular audio files (typically .ulaw), this can happen even with something like PlayTones(1004) or Read(digits,dial,,i). For that reason, it doesn't seem like purely a transcoding issue to me. I don't believe this issue has been raised publicly before, but multiple people have independently experienced this and reported it to me. Recently, a few of us made a breakthrough in this issue by discovering that G722 was partially or fully to blame for this. The issue was experienced with a SIP ATA and an Asterisk system that were both using G.722. The SIP endpoints used were: a) Grandstream HT818 b) Yealink T52S IP Phone. The issue was resolved when disallowing the g722 codec for both the ATA and Asterisk, forcing the call to use G711 ulaw. The random clicking went away at that point. For some reason, using G722 codec caused clicking to be added to the call, but this does not happen with G711. Clicking sounds "random" to the ear and does not have a steady rhthym. In most cases, this is a minor annoyance, but for some things where audio is sensitive (e.g. modems), this causes severe issues which makes the use of G722 untennable.
